Global National: Jan. 10, 2022 | Health workers hope for Omicron peak soon as hospitals are strained
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Canada’s front-line health workers continue to fight COVID-19’s fifth wave, as a surge of Omicron infections keeps swamping hospitals. Abigail Bimman reports on the toll it’s taking on front-line workers and how this wave compares to previous ones.

Despite the surge of Omicron and a lack of immunity for kids, British Columbia and Alberta students have resumed in-person learning. It’s a relief for some parents and children. But as Heather Yourex-West reports, there are no guarantees schools will stay open.

The Omicron surge was also at the top of the agenda as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held a call with Canada’s premiers. From warnings of vaccine mandates, to pressure over approving COVID-19 antiviral pills, David Akin explains what was discussed and what it means for Canadians.

Meanwhile, after a high-stakes legal battle, Novak Djokovic’s visa has been reinstated, so he can stay in Australia and compete in the Australian Open. But as Eric Sorensen explains, that does not mean the tennis champion is in the clear yet.

Plus, Britain’s monarchy will soon celebrate an historic anniversary, as Queen Elizabeth prepares for her Platinum Jubilee, marking an unprecedented 70 years on the throne. Redmond Shannon looks at how Buckingham Palace plans to pull out all the stops.

Also, see the heart-stopping rescue of a pilot who crashed his plane onto railroad tracks, just before an even bigger disaster struck.

And remembering Bob Saget: how the entertainer is being remembered both as a beloved television dad and a comedian without boundaries.

Omicron doesn't require hospitalization. Do your duty and spread it. This is our opportunity to create a solid defense for the Corona series if you haven't attained the immunity yet. Open up, discard the masks. Omicron does not cause serious disease.

People should have the choice to be vaccinated. Just pay $1000 if they absolutely need to be hospitalized for covid. I am sure they would rather fight it at home and free those beds up for those that need them more…Then everyone will see things as fair !

I feel strongly that schools should be closed. A good friend of my grand daughter works part time at McD's. She contracted covid-19 (omicron) and found out her whole class is now infected. I am sure that by the end of the week it is going to be insanely obvious to close schools. So many kids are afraid of catching covid-19 and giving it to someone else, they just won't go to school. I Tried to get a test kit today, and they are not available unless someone works at say, "a fast food chain." This virus has mutated three times, and I hear there is another one on the horizon. It's so hit and miss with the information out there that is not really true unless you live in Ontario. I am a senior looking after a 15yo on a fixed pension. Very worried and very tired of covid-19.

The reasoning of those who are unvaccinated is not tied to the pandemic; the reasoning

is based on their ideology, or their politics.

I don't care which it is, but its their choice.

Just like its my choice to take a pass on the booster as it appears to be ineffective.

My dance with covid wasn't fun, but i didn't need hospitalization.

My former neighbour's dance with covid wasn't fun either, he needed hospitalization and now he's dead.

The difference, he was unvaccinated; i've been jabbed twice.

    Choices!

Its important to recognize that those who are vaccinated, and those who are

at greater risk like the elderly, or those who require extended care /treatment at hospitals of which

care/treatment has been cancelled, represent the majority. That majority are vaccinated, but continue to be

impacted by the decisions and actions of the minority who refuse to get vaccinated.

The reality is that the number of infections of the new variants are massive, the rate of transmission isn't

political; neither is the rate of infection, which is why covid is ravaging our health care resources.

Closing a smaller hospital in Fort Erie and redeploying Doctors and nurse elsewhere throughout

the region isn't a viable long term solution and a terrible short term solution.

A third of a hospital's staff calling in sick isn't an ideology.

A third of a EMS attendant's calling in sick isn't political, it means ambulances remain in

    their parking lots, not deployed.

I'm reading almost 50% of Ontario's covid hospitalizations are those who are unvaccinated.

Hard to know true numbers because the media can't be trusted to report what few facts

are available because they won't fact check or do the research – too busy creating clickbait.

Also hard to know true numbers because the government isn't being transparent in reporting,

testing, tracking or tracing. Test kits and vaccines have been promised but not delivered,

and yet the government continues to plead with people to get vaccinated so "things" can

    return to normal.

Which side of the government's mouth do we listen to, the lies, or the false promises?

These political "solutions" are simply half measures, which is why we're either still in

the 4th wave, or just entering the 5th wave; and the 6th wave has already been seen in Asia.

So more variants are coming. That's a fact!

Clearly the federal politicians are not closing the borders and provincial governments

are not locking everything down. And every level of government in each province and territory

is left to do their own thing.

So say "hello" to the new normal.

Like it or not, any measures that reduce the rate/number of hospitalizations, infections or

transmissions is needed, and overdue – benefit maximization.

Or is this the perfect storm the politicians have been trying to create in their efforts

to privatize health care and cash in?

Really don't want to say it, let alone see it, but the time to restrict what and where the

unvaccinated can access and enforce it, is just one starting point.

Allarity Therapeutics' , Stenoparib, demonstrates additional pre-clinical antiviral activity against new variants of Coronavirus. Since stenoparib inhibits a host protein, the antiviral activity of stenoparib should inhibit all variant strains. The current study explored the activity of stenoparib against four SARS-CoV-2 strains including the SARS-CoV-2 67 Germany/BavPat1/2020 wild-type strain, as well as the Alpha, Beta, Gamma

I don’t understand how anyone would care about this anymore. I for one hope to infect my co-workers and as many elderly as possible when the return to office orders are given to us plebs. Life must go on and heard immunity needs to happen, even if a few colleagues end up on respirators or the elderly pass on, this is necessary to thin out the weak especially those that are defective and have co-morbidities. We need active members of society contributing to the workplaces and attendance within real estate leases to maintain our standard of living. I vote liberal for a reason and am thankful to Justin for saving us all and for being a visionary
