Synopsis

Big Tech had a rough year in 2021, as the regulatory grip tightened, and whistle-blowers spilled the beans. Issues related to privacy, fake news, and hate speech made headlines. With more regulation in the works, Big Tech will have to learn to play by the new rules. But will that make this year any less turbulent than the previous one?

Around two years ago, for the first time, the government began to push back against Big Tech in right earnest. It can be safely said now that those were just the initial steps towards taming a beast that had acquired an intimidating size. For, 2021 saw a series of episodes in which the tech giants were pitted against the government even as regulators tightened the screws on compliance.
