Students in Alberta are getting an extended winter break, but the province says it won’t bring in any more restrictions heading into the new year. Neither is Saskatchewan, where students are going back to class next week as planned. As Heather Yourex-West explains, the prairie provinces are hoping a lighter touch will get them through this Omicron wave.

Wildfires in Colorado have sparked a tragic end to the year, with tens of thousands of people forced to flee towering flames. More than 500 homes have been destroyed. Jennifer Johnson reports.

For the first time since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, South Africa has lifted its overnight curfew. The government believes the country is past the peak of its fourth wave, driven by the Omicron variant. As Redmond Shannon reports, that is encouraging news for country’s like Canada, which is still experiencing a surge in cases.

As 2021 wraps up, Global News takes a moment to look back at some of the biggest moments of the past year. Once again the pandemic dominated our lives, but so many other events have happened. Some inspired us, some shocked us, and several moments even made us cry. Mike Armstrong reports.

The Premiers of the Prairie Provinces are more worried about pleasing their greasy wheels than protecting citizens. It's all self-serving politics in an attempt to increase their failing political careers, and the numbers will soon show how inept their leadership is. Albertans have continually had the highest Covid numbers per capita throughout the pandemic, and our failed leadership will assure that we continue on that trend. Bless our Medical personnel, we as fellow Albertans (Kenny is NOT) are so sorry for what you're about to go through because of the very man who's been attacking you from day one. The hearts and support of Albertans are with you, even if our leadership isn't! To all other fellow Albertans; we're on our own again, Good Luck everyone!

Pray for Betty because she's probably not in heaven as your supposed to know your going to heaven not think it this is why were in the end times the world thinks it can reject God and his salvation, Jesus is the only way and if you don't repent to him and turn from sin your not allowed in heaven no matter how good you think you are:) FYI if you haven't accepted Jesus he's real not a religion You just go in a private place tell him you believe and tell him your sorry for what you think you did wrong; he will answer that prayer then start reading the bible and praying and God will tell you what to do

An unfortunate consequence of allowing forests to develop in residential areas. Man cannot learn that a profusion of trees that are in the decline stage of their life cycle is a virtual invitation to ignition. Don't touch that tree! Nature ignores mans declarations to save and cleanses the forest of the old and dying to make way for new growth, as it has been doing since time immemorial.

That this is a residential forest is immaterial.

Saving a forest is ill conceived. Trees go through a life cycle just like humans. If the objective is to prevent the harvest of trees in the wild then trees need to be treated as a crop. Trees are not a crop that can be harvested in one year, but planted each year may be harvested annually after the first crop comes on stream. That is the way to save forests. Man has learned to sow wheat instead of relying on gathering grain from plants in the wild, but is having extreme difficulty on grasping the same concept when applied to trees.

Increasingly, we see residential areas being developed where old trees approaching the end of their lives and hazardous are left standing instead of planting new ones. Imagine a society comprised solely of octogenarians. Absent is the vigor and joy of youth. All that we have are old trees collecting dust and covered with dirt with limbs breaking off and tumbling during windstorms. Absent is the fragrance of new growth and the fluttering of new leaves on a green trunk that exudes beauty and the joy of life making one feel good just to be alive. Instead, these old behemoths that shut out the daylight leading to depression, drive a generation and its successors to drugs, drink and worse.
