Global’s Sharmeen Somani spoke with the chief of the township to ask how it’s working out for them and also had some experts weigh in.

Where can I work 24/7? I don't want to be a liberal getting free handouts by destroying the economy and increasing inflation. It cost over a million dollars to get a house where I live.

I work for a municipal government as an electrician. Right now we work 7 hour days. I find it hard to get what I need to in that short time frame (as after the 7 hours it goes to OT, and no one wants to pay that now). I suggested the 4 day work week for 10 hour days which would allow more time for daily work to get done as we are a service call based environment (small installs as well). In turn there would be a 3 day off period which would rotate to cover the remaining 5th day or normal operating hours. The 10 hr days would also enable more work around other service and division schedules to address certain situations etc. The folks that like to work would feel like more got done and accomplished and a sense of more purpose.

I like the idea, but with the same salary and a reduced number of hours, say 32 not 40 in 4 days…otherwise it does not make sense…..

These days some people is even working from home five days a week and with even longer periods after the official end of the working day, say 5 pm….completing up to 12 hours a day or more and some times also having to do extra work during the weekend

That's 4 more days than I am willing to work without freedom. I will not be a slave. The society that cast me aside will pay my bills.

I have a critical job that must be done in the field. They won't give me a 4 day work week. 😪

This could be the perfect system. Full time younger family members could work full time on a 4 day week, while semi retired could work the three day week. It sounds great. Long or longer weekends all the time without any productivity loss. Win Win Win! 👍😁🤗😎
PS. Lets not forget to mention one less day of driving and polluting the air.

Nothing is free! If you want a job with less hours look for one. Ontario has officially has a 44 hour work week before overtime. So every time a government entity offer 32-36 hours with similar pay it’s tax payers who pay!

Many companies offer less hours if you cut pay proportionately.

A compressed work week doesn't give more time off. Look at what Iceland is doing; a real reduction to a 4 day work week with a 20 percent decrease in hours.

There once was a time people worked for government as a civil servant to do service. Knowing full well you could make more in the private sector, the focus was helping your town, city, province….country. TODAY, civil servants are upper income, with the best benefits and pension package. Oh, on the backs of taxpayers most of whom cannot afford these luxuries for themselves or there families. Oh, and all with the rudest, most belligerent employees who work for government. Thank you unions, and legislation insisting on union workers at the governmental levels. I've always said, union works are usually NOT the best or most motivated workers, but they are certainly the best paid with benefits. What is wrong with this picture?

Four day work weeks are the way to go ! But not with 10 hour days. Ideally
working 8 or 9 hrs tops would be best !
