Afghans have scaled back their Valentine’s Day celebrations this year due to the return of the Taliban rule, which has enforced a strict version of Sharia law.
Samir and Maryam, an engaged couple in Kabul, said on Feb. 14 that for the past two years, they had celebrated Valentine’s Day at a restaurant. But this year, they had to stay at home.
“Yesterday, we went to a restaurant to make a reservation, but unfortunately we could not make a booking at any restaurant due to security issues and threats,” said Samir.
Kabul flower seller Khalid Sangeen said people used to buy flowers for their loved ones on Feb. 14, but “now people do not pay attention to all these things because they neither have a job nor money for such things.”
The Islamist movement has struggled to show a more conciliatory face to the world since it swept to power on Aug. 15, 2021, but there remains uncertainty over how it will govern.
It has said cultural activities would be allowed, as long as they did not go against sharia and Afghanistan’s Islamic culture.
