TOKYO — An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 on Friday struck off Iwate Prefecture in northeastern Japan, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The temblor occurred at around 11:25 p.m. local time, with the epicenter, with a depth of 20 km, being at 40.0 degrees north latitude and 142.1 degrees east longitude.
The quake logged five upper in some parts of Iwate prefecture on the Japanese seismic intensity scale which peaks at seven. So far no tsunami warning has been issued. (Japan-Earthquake)

KABUL — Two civilians were killed and three others wounded as an explosive device went off in Afghanistan’s eastern Paktia province on Friday, the state-run news agency Bakhtar reported.
A mortar shell left over from the past wars exploded in Sarokhil area of Gardi Siri district, killing two people on the spot and injuring three others, the news agency said.
All the victims are civilians, Bakhtar added without providing more details. (Afghanistan-Blast)

BANGKOK — Despite record-high daily COVID-19 cases, Thailand on Friday announced further easing of social distancing rules nationwide, allowing more businesses to resume operations.
The government is also considering to cancel the requirement of pre-departure COVID-19 tests for inbound travelers from April 1, as part of relaxed border control measures to boost tourism, Natapanu Nopakun, an official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told a daily news briefing of the Center for the COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).
