Associate Professor Yuma Yamada of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Hokkaido University was declared as the recipient of the American Pharmacists Association’s 2022 Ebert Prize—the oldest existing pharmacy award in the US—on December 8, 2021.

Associate Professor Yuma Yamada, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Hokkaido University.

The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) was the first professional association of pharmacists in the United States, founded in 1852, and is composed of more than 62,000 pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists, student pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and others interested in the profession. The Ebert Prize was established in 1873. It recognizes the author(s) of the best report of original investigation of a medicinal substance published in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the past year. Associate Professor Yamada and co-authors were recognised for the paper Mitochondrial Delivery of an Anticancer Drug Via Systemic Administration Using a Mitochondrial Delivery System That Inhibits the Growth of Drug-Resistant Cancer Engrafted on Mice.

“When I look at the list of Ebert Prize winners, I see great researchers whom I respect, and their winning papers are very outstanding. It is a great honor and a great surprise to me that I have been selected to receive the 2022 Ebert Prize for my paper,” said Associate Professor Yamada. “I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Professor Hideyoshi Harashima of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Hokkaido University, our laboratory members, and many collaborators for giving me the best opportunity to conduct research. I would also like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to the many people who have believed in the potential of our research and have supported us. I will continue my research activities vigorously with the ultimate goal of developing mitochondria-targeted nanomedicine.”

The Ebert Prize ceremony will be held during the 2022 APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition in San Antonio, Texas, USA, on March 18–21, 2022.
