A sparrow named Happy has begun to make waves on social media after a former Quebec resident, Maria Bertrand, rescued the little one in May 2020 while living in California during the COVID-19 pandemic.
At that time most animal rehabilitation clinics were closed due to the pandemic, so she took the sparrow home and tried to nurse him back to health. When Happy was finally examined, Bertrand was told he couldn’t be released to the wild due to his damaged beak which curves upwards, making him look like he’s smiling and giving him his name.
As Global’s Olivia O’Malley reports, the baby bird found on a sidewalk not only gave Bertrand a sense of purpose as she nursed it back to health, but has brought joy to thousands on social media.

I like when Happy flew over to wake her up.. 😍
I had a baby sparrow when I was young! He was smart, and came to me when called and always wanted to tuck under my arms, legs, clothes. Didn't like sleeping alone.
I love all animals
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news here: This species, aka HOSP, is non-native in the US and kills young bluebirds, chikadees, titmice and other native songbirds. They are invasive and NOT a protected species for good reason. Please do your research (Sialia sialis is a great place to start) before commenting on this. Thank you.
❤️❤️❤️🥰🥰🤗🤗… you are both amazing
Beautiful story
the new comers from the 3rd world will eat that bird along with cooking a house cat like meat on the sidewalk
